There are three ways to get programmatic iMessage, and the decision is usually made on the sticker price when it should be made on who carries the operational burden.

The cost nobody prices
Self-hosting means a personal Apple ID sends your business messages. If that account gets restricted, the blast radius is not a failed campaign — it is somebody's photos, purchases and devices. That is not a line item, and it is the strongest argument against the free option for anything customer-facing.
The ten-minute calculation
- How many messages a month? Under about fifty, a shared sender at $20 is cheaper than any amount of your attention.
- What is an hour of your time worth? Self-hosting costs a handful of hours a year in maintenance, concentrated at the worst moments — a macOS update, a mid-campaign failure.
- Does anything depend on it? If a missed message means a missed appointment, you are buying reliability, not software.
- Is a fallback required? Roughly half your recipients may be on Android. Building SMS fallback yourself is a real project.
- Who fixes it at 8am on a Monday? If the honest answer is nobody, buy.
When self-hosting is genuinely right
It is not a trick question — there are real cases. A personal project. An internal alerting channel where the recipients are your own team. A prototype you will throw away. Anything where a silent failure costs nothing and the Apple ID is not attached to a real person's life.

When paying for implementation is right
When the bottleneck is not the API but the wiring: you have a CRM or a field service system, no developer, and no appetite to learn a middleware tool. Paying a provider that does CRM-native setup costs more per month than a bare line and less than a developer week, and it is the correct answer more often than technical people assume.
The failure mode to avoid is paying for implementation and then not having anyone to answer replies. That is the same mistake as buying a phone line and not staffing it. Who answers is the real constraint.
